Snapper Rocks, Gold Coast Australia
I usually don’t shoot a lot of contests. It’s not my favorite time to make images and there are so many photographers who are great at capturing the events. Especially now with the quick turnaround of the photos on social media and the web I find them less and less inspiring to shoot. At the same time we’re so lucky to be living in an era when we still get to see the GOAT of our sport still in a jersey and winning heats. Kelly was heading out for a late afternoon heat just before this big tropical storm came in. Rather than focus on the action, I wanted to give a sense of scale of what it might feel like to compete. Effortless, yet exposed, confident, while still maintaining grace. Those rocks are extremely sharp and notorious for cutting feet and breaking fins off during the jump off. With so many people on the beach watching, this was his calm before the storm.
